Onion belongs to the onion family (Alliaceae) and is a perennial crop, but grown as an annual. Onion (Allium) is widely spread with over 600 species in Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, East Asia and North America. It has bisexual flowers and has foreign pollination. Honeybees are very important to ensure proper pollination of onions.
Onions manage best on well-drained, sand-blended clay soils that is well fertilized, in the mild regions of the country.
